Direct Anki Export

How to connect directly to Anki for seamless exports.

To use the direct Anki export feature, you must have the AnkiConnect plugin installed. You can install it in Anki via Tools -> Add-ons.

Note: Anki must be running at export time for the connection to be established.

Required Note Type

The app expects to find a note type named waci-export with the following fields:

  • Hanzi
  • Pinyin
  • Meaning
  • PartOfSpeech
  • Sentence
  • UsageNotes

If this note type doesn't exist, you can create it in Anki via Tools -> Manage Note Types.

Alternative Method

If you would like to use a different note type, please use the CSV Export option for now. You can then import the CSV into Anki using Anki's native import functionality. This allows you to select your preferred note type and map the CSV columns to the appropriate fields.

Note: For both options, you can choose which deck to import the cards into.

Anki Import (Known Words)

Import your existing Anki vocabulary to track what you already know.

On the Profile page, you can import words from an Anki deck to mark them as known. Known words are automatically excluded when viewing vocabulary from your sources, making it easy to focus on what's new.

Note: Anki must be running with the AnkiConnect plugin installed for the import to work.

How It Works

  • Select the deck you want to import from. All subdecks are included automatically.
  • A word is considered "known" if it has been reviewed at least once and is not suspended.
  • The app checks each note's fields in order and picks the first one that contains Chinese characters (hanzi) as the word.
  • This means decks with different note types are supported, but the field containing the target word must come before any other fields with Chinese characters (e.g. example sentences).
  • Each import fully replaces the previous one. Only the most recent import is used.
